Who it is for
Adults who notice themselves planning a reply, comparing stories, or offering advice before checking what the speaker wants.
Agree on the exercise before starting
Ask whether the other person wants to try a brief listening practice. Choose a manageable topic such as a busy day or a small planning frustration. The listener’s role is to understand, not to collect evidence or produce the perfect response.
Let the speaker finish a thought, then summarize in your own words. Use “Did I get that right?” as a real invitation to correct you. If the summary misses the point, revise it instead of defending your listening.
Practice example
Speaker: “The schedule changed again after I arranged childcare.” A possible summary is, “The last-minute change disrupted planning you had already done. What was the hardest part?” This recognizes the practical effect without declaring what the speaker must feel.
Before offering a solution, ask whether ideas would help. Print one sheet per conversation and leave room for corrections. A completed worksheet is not evidence that the other person felt heard; ask them about that directly.
