EQTiger Assessment Methodology
EQTiger uses fixed scoring rules to turn scenario choices and self-reported habits into descriptive feedback. This page explains the design, its limits, and the evaluation still needed.

EQTiger is an original 36-item assessment for adult reflection. Its six dimensions organize feedback about everyday emotional choices. They have not been established as independent psychological factors, and EQTiger is not a validated psychometric instrument.
Six dimensions, one practical framework
- Emotional Self-Awareness
- Noticing and naming what you feel, and why.
- Emotional Regulation
- Choosing how you respond when feelings run high.
- Empathy and Perspective-Taking
- Understanding how a situation feels from someone else’s side.
- Social Awareness
- Reading the room: cues, moods and group dynamics.
- Relationship Communication
- Expressing needs and listening in ways that build trust.
- Conflict Navigation
- Working through disagreement without damage.
These labels describe the product framework. A person can respond differently across settings, and a single result cannot establish a fixed emotional type.
Two kinds of evidence
Each dimension includes three scenario questions and three habit questions. Scenarios ask you to choose among four actions. Habit questions use a five-point frequency scale. Choosing a constructive action on a page differs from carrying it out under pressure.
| Evidence | Meaning | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Scenario judgment | Recognition of a response the item author judged constructive | Not observed behavior or a comprehensive ability test |
| Self-reported habits | How often you say a behavior describes you | Not independently verified frequency |
| Demonstrated ability | Would require performance evidence beyond these choices | Not measured by EQTiger |
Ability EI concerns reasoning about emotional information. Trait EI concerns emotional self-perceptions, while mixed models include broader competencies. These traditions are not interchangeable. (O’Connor and colleagues, 2019) Using two question formats does not by itself make EQTiger an established mixed-model measure.
How scoring works
Fixed rules run on the server. Scenario choices have authored effectiveness weights, and habit choices have frequency weights. Some habits are worded in the opposite direction. The client never receives the scenario keys or reverse flags. No generative AI determines a score.
The server converts each available component to a descriptive 0 to 100 EQTiger score. Judgment and habits are averaged with equal weight within a dimension when both are available. If only one component is available and the minimum answer requirement is met, that component supplies the dimension score. Available dimension scores are averaged for the overall score, with rounding at the defined scoring steps.
A dimension needs at least three answered items. An overall score needs at least four scored dimensions. Skips are missing information, not zero points. Fewer than 27 answered items produces a low-completion caution. These thresholds are product safeguards, not established precision standards. Response time does not affect the score.
Descriptive bands
| Band | Score interval |
|---|---|
| Emerging | 0 to below 40 |
| Developing | 40 to below 60 |
| Established | 60 to below 80 |
| Strong | 80 to 100 |
These cut points are design choices. They are not clinical categories or demonstrated thresholds of competence. A small answer change can cross a boundary without representing a meaningful real-world change.
Judgment, habits, and gaps
A higher judgment component may mean you recognize a constructive response more often than you report practicing comparable habits. A higher habit component can also occur. Neither pattern establishes its cause. The questions are different, and context, interpretation, and recall matter. The report flags component differences of at least 25 points as prompts for reflection, not proof of inconsistency.
Strengths and growth areas reflect your relative pattern within this attempt. They are not comparisons with other people. Profile labels summarize that pattern and should not become identity labels.
Why there are no population rankings
EQTiger does not have a representative reference sample. It cannot translate your result into a rank among adults, an age-adjusted comparison, or a universal EQ level. A score of 70 means 70 on this product scale, not that you performed above 70 percent of people. Claims about norms or ranking would require separate evidence.
Calibration roadmap
- Collect consented, minimized response data with the scoring version and completion information.
- Review comprehension, accessibility, missing answers, response patterns, and wording effects.
- Study component consistency, repeatability, and whether the proposed dimensional structure is supported, including uncertainty.
- Seek independent qualified review of scenario keys, alternative interpretations, cultural context, and scoring choices.
- Examine relationships with relevant external measures and, where appropriate, observed behavior. Review fairness and subgroup interpretation.
- Consider population reference data only after suitable sampling, fairness review, and a documented interpretation policy.
This is a roadmap, not completed validation. No published calibration results or qualified review are claimed here.
Versioning and appropriate use
The current assessment version is eq-v1. Attempts retain their version so scoring rules can be interpreted consistently. Changes to item meaning, keys, or scoring require a new assessment version; an old result should not silently acquire a new meaning.
EQTiger does not diagnose mental-health conditions or disorders. It is not therapy or a mental-health screening. Do not use it for hiring, care decisions, or judgments about someone else. Read the limitations, explore how to read a score, or take the assessment for personal reflection.
